This year’s event was held in Adelaide at the end of October and featured a mix of business and foundry related topics in a conference style format. The main presenter Prof. John Campbell OBE, delivered a series of seminars covering new metallurgical theories and practical foundry solutions to improve casting quality and reduce defects.
Prof. John Campbell is one of the world’s leading experts in the casting industry with approximately 150 papers, and 20 patents. Campbell holds two Masters Degrees, two doctorates and is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and he was appointed to the chair of Casting Technology at University of Birmingham. The Institute of Cast Metals Engineer in the UK have even named a medal after him.
The highlight at the conference was our two AFI Queensland Young Achievers of the Year, being presented with yet more awards. Justin Spiby for Pattern Making and Ryan O’Hagan for Moulding. These awards are judged by the TAFE training staff during block release and cover key competencies such as technical aptitude, attention to detail, attitude and personal commitment.
We look forward to putting the theory learned at the conference into practice in our foundry.
